Mazda SKYACTIV-X Engine Advantages

The SKYACTIV-X engine is the first commercial engine powered by gasoline to utilize compression ignition where the mixture of fuel and air is ignited when it becomes compressed by the engine piston. Because the engine isn’t technically homogeneous, the engine is referred to as Spark-Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI).

To simplify: this technology allows for a gasoline combustion engine to improve fuel efficiency. Amazingly, the process does not affect performance negatively. In fact, Mazda claims the engine response is improved and results in 10-30 percent more torque and a 35-45 percent increase in efficiency over Mazda gasoline engines from 2008 and earlier.

The SKYACTIV-X engine offers the efficiency and torque of diesel engines with the emissions and performance capabilities of a gasoline engine. As the previous SKYACTIV engines are named SKYACTIV-G for the gasoline engine and SKYACTIV-D for the diesel engine, the “X” marking of the new engine represents the combining of powers.

The Mazda SKYACTIV-X engine will first be available in 2020 on the Mazda3. For more information regarding this or any other innovative technology from Mazda, contact us or stop in and talk to a member of the Mazda of Lodi staff.
