2016 Mazda CX-9 Engine Specs and Performance
When Mazda began revealing all of its 2016 model year vehicles without a mention of the CX-9, we were left to wonder what was to become of our favorite midsize SUV. We doubted Mazda would retire such a fun-to-drive, successful model, and indeed, they haven’t. Instead, they’ve revealed that the CX-9 is just arriving a little late to the 2016 model year party, and once you see the details on the 2016 Mazda CX-9 engine specs and performance, you’ll see that the wait was definitely worth it.
New Engine for the 2016 Mazda CX-9
Previously, Mazda had been putting a V6 engine under the hood of the CX-9, which delivered plenty of power and a fun driving experience. As expected, however, Mazda has decided the CX-9 needed a SKYACTIV makeover, which it obviously receives through the sleek exterior styling.

But now, SKYACTIV is also found under the hood with a brand new SKYACTIV-G 2.5T, a turbocharged engine that Mazda said retains SKYACTIV’s impressive efficiency. Though we are still waiting on exact figures for the fuel economy estimates, don’t let the new engine’s efficiency fool you, as there is plenty of power to be enjoyed. In the CX-9, the engine produces up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. It has a compression ratio of 10.5:1.
What is Dynamic Pressure Turbo?
Some may not like hearing that the new CX-9 comes with a turbocharged engine given that some of the turbocharged shortcomings include lackluster real-world fuel economy and poor performance when operating at low RPMs. Mazda, however, anticipated this and has developed the first turbocharging system capable of varying the degree of exhaust pulsation depending on engine speed. It’s called Dynamic Pressure Turbo, and it’s said to be able to reduce the volume of exhaust ports and maximize energy of each pulse when operating at low RPMs.
So, what else do you need to know? In addition to all the turbocharged power, the CX-9 is also available with the i-ACTIV AWD system, Furthermore, the model has shed up about 198 lbs. in the FWD configuration and about 287 lbs. in the AWD configuration, helping to ensure plenty of “Zoom-Zoom.”
